Most numerology sites use the Pythagorean system — it is simpler, more systematic, and easier to automate. But Chaldean numerology came first, and many practitioners consider it more accurate because its letter-to-number assignments are based on sound vibration rather than alphabetical order.

What Is Chaldean Numerology?
Chaldean numerology is the oldest known system of numerology, originating in ancient Babylon (modern-day Iraq). It assigns numbers to letters based on their vibrational frequency rather than their position in the alphabet, uses only numbers 1 through 8 (9 is considered sacred and reserved), and calculates name numbers from the name a person is commonly known by, not necessarily their birth certificate name.
Chaldean vs. Pythagorean: Key Differences
Letter assignments. Pythagorean numerology assigns numbers 1–9 to letters in strict alphabetical order (A=1, B=2, C=3...). Chaldean assignments are irregular — based on the sound each letter produces. For example, in Pythagorean, S=1. In Chaldean, S=3.
The number 9. Pythagorean uses all numbers 1–9. Chaldean avoids 9 in letter assignments because it is considered a holy number — it only appears as a final result, never as an intermediate value.
Which name to use. Pythagorean always uses your full birth certificate name. Chaldean uses the name you actually go by — your everyday name — because that is the vibration you are living in right now.
Compound numbers. Chaldean numerology gives special attention to compound (double-digit) numbers before reducing them. The number 15, for instance, carries specific meaning beyond simply reducing to 6. Pythagorean generally reduces immediately.

How to Calculate Your Chaldean Name Number
Use the name you go by daily. Write out each letter, assign its Chaldean value from the chart above, and add them together. If the result is two digits, note the compound number, then reduce to a single digit.
Example: "MAYA" → M=4, A=1, Y=1, A=1 → 4+1+1+1 = 7. Chaldean name number: 7.
Compare this to the Pythagorean calculation: M=4, A=1, Y=7, A=1 → 13 → 4. Different system, different number, different interpretation.
Which System Should You Use?
There is no objectively correct system. Pythagorean is more widely used, easier to calculate, and has a larger body of modern interpretation. Chaldean is older, vibrationally grounded, and often considered more nuanced by practitioners who work with both.
